I have a soft spot for Tom Tykwer due to his early films, his work with the Wachowski sisters, and the tv series Bablyon Berlin. This doesn’t quite work, sadly — the script really needed another pass and it doesn’t do Watts and Owen any favors with their dialogue. The centerpiece showdown in the Guggenheim is a welcome jolt, but feels like it belongs in a different movie.
Still: you can see it was made by professionals — there’s plenty to enjoy in the score, locations, cinematography , and good performances. It doesn’t all come together in the end, but I wish we still lived in a time where we had a bounty of these movies.
