I missed Sinners in theaters the first time through, eventually watching it on HBO Max. Thankfully Bryn Mawr Film Institute brought back some Oscar contenders for limited screenings (regular 4K, sadly no IMAX for me). The movie is still packed with way too many ideas to do them proper justice, but the things that I was a bit mixed on (MBJ’s performance, the look of the film) faded away seeing (and *hearing*) it on the big screen. The hyper-saturated outdoors scenes are still not my favorite look, but I can’t fault the way Autumn Durald Arkapaw frames the scenes and moves the camera — she thoroughly deserved that Oscar. I caught more of the nuance in Michael B. Jordan’s performances — the subtle ways he alters how he holds his body and sets his face. You simultaneously feel their likeness as twins, and their distinct personalities.
Works much better for me as a drama (or even a musical) than a horror film, but I’m not really a horror fan at heart.
