Finally worked my way to the start of the Oslo trilogy. There is a lot of formal experimentation going on here, and you can see some of the techniques that get refined later on in Oslo, August 31st and The Worst Person in the World: the voiceover, the novelistic chapter stops, the needle drops. I felt the influence of French New Wave films, Vertigo (that Paris sequence is excruciating), and Run Lola Run. It doesn’t all add up but it is nice to see Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier figuring out their storytelling style.
