I was really worried about Michael Mann revisiting his masterpiece Heat, but what he and Meg Gardiner have done here is really compelling—yes, it’s partly a prequel, but also a leap into the future that feels more thematically linked to Public Enemies,1 Miami Vice, and especially Blackhat: a glimpse at how technology renders most borders porous or nonexistent for business, crime, or both. Mann’s usual obsessions with romance, time, and tragedy are woven throughout. I can’t wait to see this onscreen.
That film’s look at how old-school bank robbers are rendered obsolete by technology is echoed by Chris Shiherlis’ story in the modern day sections. ↩︎
